Democritus
Atomos
A Greek philosopher, not a scientist in the modern sense, Democritus argued that if you kept cutting a piece of matter in half, you'd eventually reach a piece that couldn't be cut any further. He called this smallest piece atomos, meaning "uncuttable." He had no way to test this — it was pure reasoning — but the name stuck for over two thousand years.
